Wolf spiders are among the largest spiders in Nebraska. They are common outdoors, and only accidentally find their way indoors by wandering into houses and buildings. Many people who find one of the larger species of wolf spiders think that they look like small tarantulas because they are quite hairy. Even though some wolf spiders are large, there are also many smaller species. Regardless of their size, wolf spiders are distinguished by a distinctive eye pattern. Their eyes are arranged in two rows with four small eyes in the lower row. The upper row is recurved with a large pair of middle eyes directed forward and a smaller pair of lateral eyes located further back. Wolf spiders do not build webs to catch their prey, but are active hunters–they either ambush or freely hunt their prey. They are appropriately named because they powerfully pounce on their victims. Wolf spiders use their eyesight to detect prey, but also react to vibrations.

Black Widows in your home, barn or business can be a sign of a larger pest infestation. Spiders are considered predators and primarily feed on other insects. The popular belief that the male black widow spider is eaten after one encounter with a female has given this spider its name. Adult female black widows, Latrodectus mactans, are jet black with a distinct red hourglass shape on the underside of the abdomen and are about 1/2 inch long. Males are only about half the size and are often gray or brown and lighter than females. To capture insect prey, the female black widow constructs an irregular, tangled, crisscrossed web of coarse silk in an undisturbed place. The Black widow's venom is a nerve poison and is even more toxic to humans than the prairie rattlesnake. Black widow spiders are found in Nebraska, but are not very common.
The female constructs an irregular web in undisturbed, dry locations such as basements, garages, closets and attics. The web is not usually used to trap insect prey. Instead, the brown recluse is a hunter, emerging from its hiding place at night in search of small insects for food. Favorite hiding places are in seldom-used clothing hanging in dark closets, in boxes of magazines, papers and other items, the underside of furniture, cracks and spaces around baseboards, window and door facings and in dark cellars and garages. In Nebraska, it is thought brown recluse-infestations begin when infested items and boxes are brought into a non-infested home or apartment. They are not found outdoors much, although they survive well in unheated warehouses and outbuildings. Brown Recluse spiders may only be observed during the night when they venture from their hiding places. Most people are bitten after they put on clothes, when cleaning closets, garages, barns or rolling on a it in bed. At first, you may feel no pain from a brown recluse bite, but, after a few hours, you Call us to help make sure that doesn't happen.
